Stinkin' hamster.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite dinners Mom made was pork chops, scalloped potatoes, and applesauce. I made that for the first time last night. Came out pretty good ~ not as good as hers, but not too bad. Tonight I'm going to try to replicate Pop's chicken. I'm not sure about it, so I'll probably have to give him a call after I post this blog.
Not much news here right now, really. Chris is continuing to prepare for the State spelling bee at the end of March, and Josh's OM team is working toward their competition in just a few weeks. Ro attended a Bible study for the first time at this church we've been attending, and he enjoyed it quite a bit. It's called Biblical Distinctives, and last night's topic was the authority of Scripture. I'm going to do the study along with him, but not go to the meetings, since they don't have childcare, at least not at this point. Perhaps we'll reverse roles when the next class starts; we'll see.
Yesterday was Mardi Gras. Funny how when I was a young adult / teen, the idea of Mardi Gras really appealed to me. It was one of those things I'd always wanted to do - go to New Orleans in February to celebrate Fat Tuesday. As I got older I guess I understood more of what it means - to indulge the flesh one last time before Lent begins (today) - and the idea of Mardi Gras has sure lost a lot of its appeal, at least to me. I don't mean that to sound judgmental, and, in fact, to be honest, I still experience Mardi Gras in my daily life at times: How many times do we binge out on Sunday knowing the diet starts on Monday? But the more I am spending time in the Word the more I want to have a heart like Jesus, a heart that hates sin 365 days a year, not just in the days leading up to Easter, or once a week on Sundays. It's obviously not very difficult to hate certain sins, but it's the "little" sins I struggle with on a daily basis, most often revolving around my mouth, my attitude, etc. Big or little, however, they are all a reflection of my heart... and it sure isn't as pretty as it should be.
Anyway, today is Ash Wednesday, and I believe, the beginning of Lent. I don't have a Catholic background, but I understand the tradition is to give something up for God for this 40-day period. I like the idea... a small sacrifice for Him Who sacrificed so much for me!

Super Tuesday
The problem with having a nocturnal animal for a pet is not that he is active while you are trying to sleep; eventually pet and owner fall into a comfortable rhythm and the sound of the wheel in which he runs becomes soothing and familiar. No, the problem with having a nocturnal animal for a pet is that when said pet decides to make an escape, it only happens in the middle of the night.
Last night Velcro the cat was driving us nuts, pawing and clawing at the carpet. Ro got up and checked things out, made sure Hamy was in his cage, came back to bed. A few minutes later it continued. I got up, found Vely had no food, gave her a little bit, went back to bed. Again the annoying clawing continued. I got up again and noticed the cat kept clawing at J's door. I went in his room and checked the cage... I didn't see Hamy.
I went back in and woke Ro up. "When you checked Hamy's cage, are you sure he was in there?" He said, "No... I saw a pile of bedding and assumed he was in there." Well, he wasn't... he got out... and just like a runaway teenager he apparently shaped his bedding to make it look like he was fast asleep (although if we'd been coherent enough to be rational we'd wonder why he wasn't working out in his Silent Spinner).
So yes... we were up at 1 a.m. trying to corral a mischievous hamster. We were so irritated at Velcro for continuing to wake us up, and she turned out actually to be the hero, finally getting through to us that Hamy was attempting to escape.
How many Wiggies does it take to capture a hamster in the middle of the night? Three, apparently. Two to discover it actually escaped. The same two can corner it in the closet and block all possible escape routes, while the third stands by and coaches and directs (this one doesn't handle rodents if possible).
Problem is, I used to be able to go right back to sleep whenever I was awakened in the middle of the night, but lately I haven't been able to. Grace woke me up Sunday night and Hamy last night, and both times I've had trouble getting back to sleep... so I'm pretty wiped out today.

I wish I was Joshua. Every day to him is awesome.

We got snow yesterday, the big, fluffy, peacefully relaxing flakes. It snowed all day long, but the roads stayed fairly clear and it wasn't - believe it or not - overly cold. Bummer I had work to do - would've been a perfect day to cuddle up with hot chocolate and a good book.
We went to the neighbors' for the last half of the Super Bowl. It didn't mean much to us this year... but it was fun to hang out. Good folk.
And tonight is the Colorado caucus. I'm ashamed to say I don't really get it. We've always had primary elections at home, so the caucus thing seems bizarre to me...
And lastly... a question that's been on my mind for months. Forgive me if I've asked it before, but: Do you tip at a Sonic drive-in?
Over and out.

J's Busy Weekend
Today's been wonderfully busy for Mr. J. He's having a great weekend!
This morning he attended the Prism Learning Fair at his school. What a cool event. He got to choose from a number of classes, including photography, scrapbooking, crimesolving, journalism, and more. He elected to take a class on aviation and another on sculpting. In addition to these, he took a class on raptors and another on Colorado wildlife. When we picked him up at 12:30 he couldn't stop talking about everything. He was pretty wound up and so excited to tell us all about all the wildlife he got to see, the simulator he saw in the aviation seminar, and the people he sculpted out of wire. It was exciting for us to see him so excited! What an awesome event!
After Prism, we grabbed lunch at Runza and ran over to do some errands. J got a haircut while Chris and I did some shopping. He looks so handsome!
As soon as we got home, two neighbor boys came over and asked if Josh could play. Ro went and met their father. These boys are 4 and 7, and their mother passed away in December. How it breaks my heart to hear that! (Mom, remember the emergency vehicles on the street behind us one night when you were here? That's when she passed away.)
We picked J up after awhile and took him to his coach's house for an OM meeting. They are nearing the competition - less than a month left - and today they began to build whatever it is they are building.
And finally, Ro picked him up from there and took him to the monster truck rally at the nearby Budweiser Events Center! How's that for a testosterone-filled evening? They're still there, and I imagine they'll be home late. :)
Tomorrow after church he gets to go to a classmate's birthday party... what a kid. I totally feel like his social secretary after this weekend!

Robert and I finished watching season 2 of 24 last night. What a cool show. We watched some behind-the-scenes stuff for that and started season 3 this afternoon. It looks like it will be every bit as good as the first two seasons. The thing is... we've watched so much of it lately... that sometimes we catch ourselves looking over our shoulders or around corners for bad guys! Geeks, I know.
