There are certain topics that I never post about on this blog, at least not seriously. One in particular has been on my mind for the past several days and it's the issue I have with weight. Actually, it's always on my mind but for the past several days posting about it has been on my mind.
Why? I think generally I am a pretty transparent person. I don't mind sharing with you most of my faults ~ spiritually, parenting, etc. But this one issue is pretty sensitive for me. We can psychoanalyze the reasons for it to death but we can save that for another day.
Suffice it to say that whenever I begin to work on my weight problem, I get sidetracked and quit. Or fail. And I don't like to broadcast that over and over and over to the masses (of course that's tongue-in-cheek because I am not deceived about the size of my blog readership like a certain Oregonian relative might be about his) (and the mass pun was not intended but amusing now that I think about it).
But this week my mom made an offer to Deb and I that would really be hard to refuse.
If Deb and I can get to our goal weights... and maintain it... she will quit smoking.
Obviously she doesn't think we can do it.
But is her overall health and longevity more important to me than Oreo cookies? I sure hope so, not to mention my own overall health and longevity, eh?
At the beginning of the week we sat and watched old home movies from the 60s with Pop. Many of the people on screen I'd never met before, but I loved watching my grandma, young and energetic and sooo pretty. It made me miss her more, though! But I know the one thing in my life she would want me to do differently is get my weight under control. She always encouraged me in that and wanted it for me even more than I did.
So... let's do it.
To help Mom live longer. To honor my grandma. To cultivate godliness reflected in self-control. To live longer myself. And for the other 5,236 reasons.
Spent a few minutes online looking at weight charts... I had a target weight in mind that was backed up by the charts. I've got a lot of work to do.
And maybe by taking my quest public via this blog, I'll have accountability and support and... success.
So, as of today, I have nearly 90 pounds to lose. (Ouch. I can't believe I put that in writing, even if it is small.) That's about how much Josh weighs, a little less than Chris, and maybe two Gracies. Can you imagine? I can barely carry Grace now - I can't imagine how I'll feel when I lose just one of her in terms of weight. That's a lot of potatoes.
I've decided to tackle it in stages or phases, if you will, of 20 pound increments. Focusing on losing 20 pounds sounds a lot more do-able than losing 90!
I think on Fridays I will post re this journey my reflections, victories, struggles... so if this topic bores you, know in advance you can skip those posts!
On a somewhat related note, do any of you watch and/or are you inspired or motivated by any weight-loss-related shows on TV? I caught part of Losing it with Jillian this week but she's such a hard-*ss I actually had to turn it off. Anyone watch The Biggest Loser or anything else? If so, do you watch just for entertainment or for encouragement? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Prayers appreciated!
xoxo

Friday Numbers: Week 0
- Phase 1: Lose 20 pounds
- Pounds to go: 20
Overall pounds to: 90
The other day the elder Wigglets asked if some day I could drop them off at the library so they could spend the whole day there.
Music to my ears! Um, yes!
They don't have video games there, right?
So today I dropped them off at 1; the summer theme is Make Waves @ Your Library and they were showing Jaws. The kids watched that and are hanging out until Ro picks them up on his way home from work in a couple of hours.
It actually sounds like my kind of day.
Grace is napping and so I've gotten some things done, but I also have spent the last hour finishing another Mindy Starns Clark novel. Fun!
Here are some pics from last week. Enjoy!
You've missed me?! How sweet! I see that it's been more than two weeks since I've last blogged. Funny thing is, I can account for all of one of those weeks but I have no idea what happened the week before that. LOL I think Robert was off... but hmmm...
Let's see... a week ago Monday Ro and I were awakened by Josh alerting us that Pop had fallen. Sure enough, he cracked his ribs. At least it wasn't worse. He's still hurting of course, but seems to be doing all right over all.
On Tuesday Grace turned 4. We picked Mom and Deb up at the airport and spent most of the day at the zoo. We even brought Pop along, thinking he'd just be in the wheelchair anyway and we didn't really want to leave him alone at home. I think it was good for him, but the day sure wore him out and he was really sore afterward. We had a great day with perfect weather despite thunderstorms in the forecast (and our previous zoo experience). Had a yummy dinner at Cinzzetti's on the way home...
On Wednesday and Thursday, it was hot for Colorado. Deb, Mom, and I (and Ro when he got off work) got busy and built Grace's big birthday gift - a playset. Even Deb's arms burned a bit, and mine - well, even with sunscreen I burned pretty good. But it was worth it as Grace is in 7th heaven with her new "Palace of Grace" as she has dubbed it. (We voted for GraceLand but she prefers the palace I guess.)
And then on Friday through the weekend we froze our butts off! Okay it wasn't that cold, but Mom probably thought it was. We went to see a movie, watch roller derby in Greeley, and played countless games of Dutch Blitz along with a few rounds of Things and Trivial Pursuit. We worked on a puzzle and laughed and took care of Pop and ate and ate and ate and enjoyed spending such a great week together.
Grace has begun her next dance round, Prince & Princess dancing. Christianne has been keeping busy with band stuff, and Joshua enjoyed some big electronic expo via internet yesterday. We're doing lots of stuff at the library this summer and just generally enjoying staying close to home. Planning a short weekend trip away in August just before school starts. It feels kind of weird to not to have gone to California this year, but it's also been kind of nice hanging out at home.
Okay, so you're up to date. Mostly. I'll try to post pics soon and keep you up to date a little more often now that the fun is over. ;)
Well, the past week or so we have been on a staycation. The kids got out of school and Robert was off work and we spent a great week or so just spending time together. We went up to the RMNP and saw more elk than I ever have (even during rut!) - and a wild turkey! We went to the Butterfly Pavilion and we hung out at home. We discovered a new family game suggested by my sister - Things - and played that a lot. We all (except for Pop somehow) dealt with colds. And in all it was a great week.
Still I have to admit as nice as it was I am nothing without some sort of structure or routine. So although I got very little sleep last night I've been up for several hours already this morning, getting my calendar back in order and working on laundry, trying to get my proverbial ducks in a row.
Christianne is at her first ever high school band camp. I am actually really excited for her - it sounds like a lot of fun. It's today, overnight, and home tomorrow, and they will do some music but a lot of team-building and getting to know everyone. This one is just for rookies and section leaders, and the entire regiment has band camp (though not overnight) again on Friday and Saturday.
I'll be honest - this program is amazing and we are blessed but I'm very overwhelmed with it.
And this is just the first day.
Ro is back at work today and I'm home with Pop and Josh and Grace. I think we'll have a low-key catch-up day before we start running errands tomorrow. We are counting down to Grace's 4th birthday and the arrival of our Cali crew, a week from today.
Well, there... we're all caught up now and I'm starting to yawn. Happy June ~ Happy Summer.
xoxo
